PRESS RELEASE

ARCIGAY SALERNO: "WORDS ARE AS WEIGH AS ACTIONS. PROFESSOR ALFANO'S SUSPENSION IS AN IMPORTANT SIGNAL: WE NEED A NATIONAL LAW AGAINST HOMOSLESBOYS AND TRANSPHOBIA."“

Arcigay Salerno carefully and respectfully acknowledges the precautionary measure issued by the preliminary hearing judge of the Court of Salerno on October 10, 2025, which suspended Professor Carmine Alfano, Professor of Plastic Surgery at the University of Salerno's San Giovanni di Dio e Ruggi d'Aragona University Hospital, for twelve months from practicing medicine and holding academic positions. This measure is part of the investigations initiated in 2024 following reports from the Legal Office of the University of Salerno regarding alleged behavior and statements deemed inconsistent with the principles of respect and equality.

“The GIP's decision represents a sign of concern for the protection of individuals and the promotion of educational environments based on mutual respect,” declared Emanuele Avagliano, President of the Arcigay Salerno “Marcella Di Folco” Provincial Committee.

“We invite everyone to reflect on the value of words and the importance of a culture of dialogue and responsibility.”

Arcigay Salerno recognizes the University of Salerno's prompt and clear response to this matter, reaffirming its trust in institutions and its belief that knowledge and education must always promote equality, respect, and inclusion.

The Territorial Committee also emphasizes the need for a national law against homolesbobitransphobia, capable of comprehensively combating all forms of violence, discrimination, and hate speech, in line with the constitutional principles of equal dignity and protection of human rights.

“"Every word has weight and can contribute to building or harming," concludes Avagliano. "A clear and shared law would represent a step towards civility and maturity for society as a whole."”

Arcigay Salerno will continue to promote awareness-raising, listening, and support for those experiencing discrimination or violence, both inside and outside universities, as part of an ongoing commitment to a more aware, welcoming, and respectful community.
