Perugia: 13 years of LGBT Umbria

The Omphalos Solidarietà totale circle is born in 1992 In a small apartment on the outskirts of Perugia, thanks to Roberto's tenacity. The few members demonstrated from the beginning their desire to grow the club and fight against the city's indifference to homosexuality.

Shortly thereafter the club moved to its current location in Fratti Street, bringing with it the divergent views of the two pioneers and founding members: Roberto and Saverio, mainly concerning the different approach to be given to the club's activities: for the first they had to focus on fight against AIDS, in those years a priority for the homosexual community, while for the second they also had to include the part cultural and recreational.

The Arci Gay club, however, continued to grow thanks to the dedication of its volunteers until 1996, when it reached a deep crisis caused by the untimely death of its founder and president. Thanks to the efforts of the members of Arci Nuova Associazione, who encouraged some members (more reckless than courageous) to roll up their sleeves and not undermine Saverio's efforts, the club survived.

These gradually increased until they formed the current Arcigay ArciLesbica club. “Today the Omphalos is alive thanks to the volunteer work and capable of hosting important names in the homosexual movement, of organizing shows and meetings on the themes of homosexuality, transgenderism, visibility or STDs, of promoting reception services, a counseling center open two days a week and meetings in schools"” explains the president Patrizia Stefani.

“"Over the years, the club has also distinguished itself for its work in collaboration with local institutions, which has enabled it to achieve important goals for the LGBT community in Umbria: the registry of de facto couples in five municipalities, the inclusion of an anti-discrimination article in the new regional statute, and the important article on the recognition of de facto cohabitation."”
