The real disease is homophobia

The city coordination of Palermo
""STOP Homophobia""
invites you to:
The real disease is homophobia
town meeting
Friday, December 4, 2009
at 5:00 pm
at the Rostagno Hall, Palazzo delle Aquile, Palermo

The wave of attacks and violence against lesbians, gays, and trans people continues. In addition to the incidents that, throughout Italy (and recently also in Sicily, in Canicattì and Palermo) hit the headlines and end up in court, but many incidents of violence remain secret, unreported, and often hidden within the confines of homes.

Arcigay and the associations and movements that make up the "Stop Homophobia" coordination (Agedo, Articolo Tre, Kè Palermo, Collettivo Malefimmine and others), after the demonstration in September which brought almost 2,000 people to the streets, continue the daily fight against homophobia and intolerance.

To this end, the coordination convened a citizens' meeting, inviting representatives of civil society, politicians, trade unions, legal professionals, and ordinary citizens to jointly decide on actions to combat the rampant homophobia that shows no sign of abating.

Furthermore On Tuesday 1 December 2009, a motion against homophobia was presented to the municipality of Palermo by Stefania Munafò, a PDL councillor., which calls on the municipality to take concrete action against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

In particular, it is urged:
– the implementation of an awareness campaign;
– the establishment of an Observatory between institutions, law enforcement agencies, and associations for analysis, awareness-raising, training, and the adoption of concrete actions;
– membership in the Ready network, the National Network of Public Administrations against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

According to the Arcigay Homophobia report, in 2008 homophobia and transphobia led in Italy to nine murders, forty-five assaults and violence, seven extortions, as well as cases of
Bullying, vandalism, and numerous other incidents of intolerance and oppression. And the trend for 2009 is significantly increasing.

In a context where LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) people are discriminated against, killed, fired, separated from their families, raped, and relegated to the margins, the presentation of this motion represents an important step towards the affirmation of civil rights. This is the first time that an initiative of this type has been carried out in Palermo.or.

The motion's contents, the process for its approval, and the action plan against homophobia will be presented on Friday at 5 p.m., during the citizens' meeting "The real disease is homophobia."", in the presence of representatives of Confindustria, Confcommercio, trade unions, the judiciary, political forces, LGBT associations, etc.
