World AIDS Day is celebrated on December 1st. To mark the occasion, Arcigay is committed throughout Italy, through its clubs, to dozens of prevention initiatives, in-depth analysis of HIV/AIDS issues, and to promoting the well-being of people living with HIV.
The association's branches, in addition to promoting specific campaigns, will organize information booths, conferences, or conventions and will distribute condoms, dental dams, and lubricant to the public.

Arcigay Agrigento Ganimede, in collaboration with ARCI John Belushi, is organizing an information evening on the prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) to mark World HIV Day. At 10:00 PM on Saturday, December 1, 2012, an information booth will be set up in Piazza San Francesco to distribute educational materials and condoms, in the knowledge that condoms are currently the only effective weapon against the spread of the virus. We also emphasize the need to implement policies against discrimination against people living with HIV, in order to ensure equal rights and respect for the dignity of both HIV-positive and HIV-negative people. To this end, transmission methods will be clarified and clichés that have become entrenched over time due to previous, unfounded, terrorist propaganda will be debunked. The evening will be accompanied by the ironic commentary of Regina Terrunia. We thank Regina Terrunia, represented by Massimo Lo Cascio, and the staff of Mojo WineBar in Agrigento, whose collaboration made this event possible.
December 1st, World AIDS Day, is the international day for the prevention and fight against AIDS and HIV infections. The Arcigay Arezzo "Chimera Arcobaleno" association“ He created and produced a video spot to raise awareness about the use of condoms, to promote AIDS prevention and to eliminate some stereotypes about HIV positivity.. The Province and Municipality of Arezzo supported the ribbons, which will be displayed at the entrances to their government offices on December 1st and throughout the weekend. This demonstrates their commitment to the issue and their commitment to promoting policies and best practices for the well-being of all citizens. "Institutional awareness and information campaigns aimed at the public, especially young people, have been declining for years, while data demonstrate the continuing spread of the HIV virus, which is still considered a real social alarm," stated President Cristina Betti. In the province of Arezzo alone, the average monthly number of new infections is three, two of which are heterosexual and one gay. Volunteers will also be present outside Arezzo Wave Winter throughout the evening of December 1st, alongside the AASP camper, where instant HIV testing will also be available.
World AIDS Day, observed annually on December 1, is dedicated to raising awareness of the global AIDS epidemic caused by the spread of the HIV virus. Since 1981, AIDS has killed over 25 million people, becoming one of the most destructive epidemics in recorded history. Although access to treatment and antiretroviral drugs has recently improved in many regions of the world, the AIDS epidemic claimed approximately 3.1 million lives in 2005 (estimates range between 2.9 and 3.3 million), over half of whom (570,000) were children. The idea of a World AIDS Day originated at the 1988 World Health Ministers' Summit on AIDS Prevention and Programmes and has since been adopted by governments, international organizations, and advocacy groups worldwide. From 1987 to 2004, World AIDS Day was organized by UNAIDS, the United Nations organization dedicated to the fight against AIDS. In collaboration with other organizations, UNAIDS selected a theme for the Day each year. Since 2005, UNAIDS has delegated responsibility for organizing and managing World AIDS Day to WAC (The World AIDS Campaign), an independent organization. WAC chose as its theme for the year—and until 2010—Stop AIDS: Keep the Promise, a theme that is not strictly related to World AIDS Day but reflects WAC's daily commitment. Arcigay Bari, in collaboration with Makumba Officine, organized an entire week to raise awareness about HIV.

Arcigay Bat "Le mine vaganti" has already established the distribution of both male and female condoms at its games evenings and at its headquarters. On the 30th, during our evening at Muolin Rouge in Bisceglie, condoms and informational materials will be distributed.
In Bergamo, Arcigay Bergamo Cives is trying something new. Or at least something new for Italy... For many years, a "check point" has existed at the Barcelona sauna: a facility where volunteers provide HIV testing in a friendly environment, where the social stigma of homosexuality doesn't have to be overcome. There's none of the coldness typical of healthcare settings, but where explanations and assistance are still available. The volunteers are also people who can provide important information, but they speak among peers: it's not a doctor-patient relationship, but a relationship between people. Arcigay Bergamo Cives, along with the City Sauna Club on Via Clementina, and especially with the collaboration of the ASL (Local Health Authority), is attempting to do the same here in Bergamo. This is a pilot project never before attempted in Italy, developed for December 1, 2012, World HIV and AIDS Day. HIV testing (and simultaneous testing for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and syphilis) will be available free of charge, completely anonymously, and with the same guarantees as an "official" test performed at any STD center. Samples will be taken on the afternoons of Sundays, November 18th, December 2nd, and December 16th, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, without an appointment or a prescription. At the same time, it will be possible to receive brief counseling on sexually transmitted diseases. Results will be available within 4-5 days at the ASL office, 200 meters from the sauna. Arcigay Bergamo Cives reminds that it is still important to perform tests regularly, as early diagnosis saves lives, preventing the infection from turning into disease and preventing the spread of the epidemic. Even today, HIV positivity is too often discovered too late: when the disease has already developed. This is why it is important to make the test as user-friendly as possible.

This year, the Cassero LGBT Center is taking several actions to mark December 1st, World AIDS Day. A campaign against the stigma and discrimination of HIV-positive people has already begun: a problem that leads people to put off testing, to hide the seriousness of their situation even from themselves, and which consequently generates a worrying level of late presenters (late diagnoses) similar to those found in Italy. Cassero, through its Bologna-based communications studio Kitchen, has created a video and postcard campaign aimed at highlighting how the most common everyday gestures or even the most normal gestures of affection directed at an HIV-positive person do not pose a risk of infection for other people not living with HIV. It is possible to use the same glass, cutlery, or plate as an HIV-positive person; mosquitoes do not transmit HIV even if they bite an infected person; HIV is not transmitted by sneezing; hugging or kissing a person living with HIV carries no risk. By using condoms and lubricants correctly, the risk of transmitting the infection drops by more than 90%, even during penetrative sexual intercourse. In other words, an HIV-positive person can live a normal life; therefore, it is better to fight HIV, not people with HIV. Tomorrow, November 30, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the Cassero (Via Don Minzoni 18), the seminar "Legal Protection of HIV-Positive People in Italy" will take place. This training event is accredited by the Bologna Bar Association. To date, the main legal framework for HIV-positive people in Italy remains Law 135/1990—specifically, Articles 5 and 6 of the aforementioned law—with its corollary of rulings that have interpreted, expanded, and in some cases limited these forms of protection. During the seminar, lawyers Anna Caltagirone and Luciana Grieco will discuss the civil implications of the aforementioned law, focusing specifically on labor law and privacy protection, especially in the healthcare sector. Lawyer Claudia Benvegnù will then join the discussion to briefly discuss the criminal implications of privacy protection. Finally, lawyer Michele Giarratano will present some of the cases handled in recent years by the Legal and Anti-Discrimination Help Desk run by Giuridico Cassero. A particularly important initiative this Saturday and Sunday in Piazza Maggiore is "Quick, Anonymous, and Safe. Get the Test." This weekend, the Bologna Health Authority—in conjunction with the Hospital Authority, the Municipality and Province, and associations working to fight HIV/AIDS in Bologna, including Cassero—has organized the event, bringing to the square the opportunity to undergo rapid HIV testing, a tool still experimental in Italy and not available in hospitals. In Europe, the average number of late HIV diagnoses exceeds 50% of cases, and in Italy we are in line: 63% of HIV-positive people are diagnosed with a CD4 count of 350 or less. A large portion of these Italian late presenters are actually in the advanced stages of the infection, below 200 CD4 counts (source: COA), meaning they are "in AIDS" or close to it if not treated with adequate antiretroviral therapy. The aim of the street initiative, however, is not so much to reverse this trend, but rather to spread the culture of testing among the population, the habit of self-monitoring, through the implementation of testing services and the elimination of hospitalization. The tool used in Piazza Maggiore on Saturday, December 1st (from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm), as well as on the morning of Sunday, December 2nd, is relatively new to Italy: it will be a rapid saliva test (Ora Quick), which provides a reliable result in about 20 minutes. The test will be performed by healthcare personnel provided by the S. Orsola Hospital. If the test result is reactive, a blood sample can be taken for verification testing at the Infectious Diseases Clinic of our hospital, headed by Professor Pierluigi Viale, who will remain available for this eventuality despite the holiday. The same applies to the hospital's Microbiology Laboratory, headed by Professor Maria Carla Re, which will remain available to process the samples submitted for testing as quickly as possible. Volunteers from all the participating associations will be available both to welcome those wishing to take the test and to conduct a brief interview (questionnaire), which will be administered while awaiting the results. We will also be available for post-test counseling in a separate area, should the person tested deem it necessary. International AIDS Day is also an opportunity to offer citizens an opportunity for entertainment and awareness, including a fundraiser for related initiatives. On Saturday evening at the Cassero (admission €10, with Arcigay/Arcilesbica/Arci membership card), starting at 10:30 PM, "Miss & Mister Cassero 2012" will take place, a spectacular event hosted by Matty P, Divine Brown, Lady P, and Rrose Selavy. This effervescent spectacle will feature 25 contestants showcasing their physique, posture, etiquette, and intelligence, competing for the prize provided by sponsors (Arci Bologna, Alessio Citi's fitness studio, Blu concept store, Easy Staff, GUP event organizers, Infodiscoteche website, Totò pizzeria, and Echoes event organizer Ricky Forni). The distinguished jury will include Immanuel Casto, Gaetano Navarra, and Alessandra Spisni, all three of whom will auction off a prized possession for the AIDS benefit fundraiser. Only once the crowns have been placed on the winners' hairstyles will the RED PARTY begin, with music, visuals, and performances until dawn featuring DJs Gianluca Pacini (directly from Muccassassina in Rome) and Emiliano Newmode (a star of the best Cassero nights). The secret private area, which must be carefully scouted, is a must.

Although access to treatment and antiretroviral drugs has improved recently in many regions of the world, especially in the West, the AIDS epidemic still claims 2 million deaths each year, primarily in developing countries, 260,000 of which are children. It is estimated that between 143,000 and 165,000 people in Italy are living with HIV, 22,000 of whom have AIDS and at least 30,000 are unaware of their infection. The prevalence of women is approximately 401,000, and the number is steadily increasing. Every two hours, a new infection occurs, with up to 4,000 new cases each year. Our city is particularly important on the national scene, requiring greater attention to these issues. Brescia is the third-highest Italian city in terms of overall HIV infection rates, after Milan and Rome. The Infectious Diseases Department of Brescia's Civil Hospital treats approximately 4,000 HIV-positive people. We note the almost total lack of serious prevention campaigns conducted at the city and provincial levels, especially aimed at young people, that spread an effective culture of prevention and the use of CONDOMS, the only means of preventing the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Arcigay Brescia, in collaboration with the Local Health Authority (ASL), has organized an information stand for this occasion. It will be held on Saturday, December 1st, on Via X Giornate, corner of Via IV Novembre (in front of the former Spizzico), from 10:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Free condoms and informational materials on prevention and the fight against discrimination against HIV-positive people will be distributed. A local health authority doctor will also be present to answer questions and obtain information. The day will continue in the evening with a similar prevention stand at the Trap nightclub on Via Castagna. Finally, please note that our city also has an STD (sexually transmitted disease) center at Viale Piave 40, where you can receive free and anonymous blood tests (Monday to Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Wednesday from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.) and medical appointments (Monday to Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.).
Eos Arcigay Cosenza has organized an advertising campaign consisting of posters to be displayed around the city and a video to be shared online and broadcast during the LGBT evening held in our city on December 1st. On December 2nd, the advertising campaign will be presented at the Ubik bookstore in Cosenza, explaining the various methods of protection.
For World AIDS Day, Circomassimo Arcigay and Arcilesbica of Ferrara has decided to enlist the help and involvement of various shops and businesses in the city center in promoting the 2012 campaign. "Love Your Self – Use a condom. Get tested" is the slogan and imperative of the campaign, interpreted this year by a graphic design by Martina Galletti of Immaboshi Studio. Thanks also to the support of Confesercenti, Ascom, Confartigianato, and CNA, the shops in the city center will display a poster and distribute a flyer featuring the campaign to their customers. This flyer also contains useful information about where to get tested anonymously and free of charge in Ferrara and the surrounding province. On December 1st, the staff of these businesses will wear the red ribbon, which has also been displayed in various ways in their windows. This campaign, in addition to the support of the aforementioned trade associations, received essential support from Deanna Marescotti, the Councilor for Productive Activities, the patronage of the Municipality of Ferrara and the Province of Ferrara, and the support of the Intercompany AIDS Commission of the Ferrara University Hospital and the Ferrara Local Health Authority.
“"Sleeping with the Enemy? Not Us!": Keeping Promises, Stopping AIDS (December 1, 2012) – Arcigay Genova L'Approdo is contributing this year to the fight to defeat AIDS and stop one of the greatest epidemics of all time (25 million victims since 1981) with an innovative awareness-raising and information initiative. In collaboration with TKC Teatro della Gioventù and IKEA Genova, on December 1, 2012, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, we will be on Via Cesarea, in front of the theater, where a stage will be set up where actors and actresses will perform monologues on sexuality and HIV positivity. This will attract the attention of passersby and convey, with greater emotional impact, the profound changes AIDS has brought to everyone's lives. Unfortunately, in Italy, prevention efforts are very limited or even nonexistent: it is irresponsible, given the rise in sexually transmitted infections among young people, not to have sexuality and emotional education programs in schools." "The information point we will set up next to the stage," adds Claudio Tosi, councilor of Approdo, "will serve not only to distribute informational materials and condoms, but above all to create a meeting place for those who want to ask questions and those who can provide answers. The latter are involved in a condom distribution project throughout Genoa, where they will also work alongside Arcigay. In Mantua, for the second year, under the patronage of the Province and the capital city, we will be hosting an information, awareness, and fundraising evening in collaboration with Arci Mantova, an association (Alfa Omega) that works with AIDS patients and HIV-positive people (especially children). The event will feature a local rugby team (Caimani) and the well-known THUN company, based near Mantua. We will also be providing gift items for a raffle.
In addition to the Red Ribbon Party, on Saturday 1 December 2012, from 9am to 7pm, Arcigay Mantova will be in Piazza Martiri, in the historic centre of Mantua, to distribute informational material on HIV and STD prevention, together with Anlaids, the Red Cross, the Carlo Poma Hospital of Mantua and the STD Prevention Centre of the Asl Mantua.

Numerous initiatives have been organized in the city for the occasion. The main one is a campaign (promoted by Arcigay Naples in collaboration with Criminal Candy And NPS-Network of HIV-Positive People) aimed at raising awareness among the LGBT community and inviting them to take the HIV test.
In addition to indicating a series of locations where it is possible to get tested (free of charge and completely anonymously), Arcigay has made available an agreement with the private analysis center SDN – Istituto di Ricerca Diagnostica Nucleare (Nuclear Diagnostic Research Institute), which provides, on December 1st, a free test for all members.

On World AIDS Day, the Arcigay "Tralaltro" club in Padua is displaying a banner outside its headquarters urging people not to trust their luck and to always protect themselves by using condoms, the only truly effective means of prevention against HIV. Volunteers from the association will also be on hand to distribute condoms and informational materials on sexually transmitted infections at events involving the LGBTI community in Padua: on Saturday, December 1st, at the "Santa Claus has a bear(d)" party organized by BearDoc at the Flexo Club on Via Turazza; and on Sunday, December 2nd, starting at 6:00 PM, at the Candy Bar on Via Turazza, during the "Aperigayo" event, which will raise funds for the fight against AIDS. Furthermore, aware that HIV-positive homosexuals often face discrimination even within the LGBTI community, a meeting entitled "Integration of HIV-positive People into the LGBTI Community" was organized on Wednesday, December 5th at 6:00 PM at the Tralaltro headquarters in Corso Garibaldi 41. In Pisa, in collaboration with the associations Arcigay Pisa and Arcilesbica Pisa and the Municipality of Pisa, three free documentaries will be screened at the Cineclub Arsenale from 6:30 pm until the end of the evening: L'amore originale by Lidia Borghi, which reflects on the themes of faith and homosexuality through the stories of two Christian mothers with gay children; United in Anger: a History of Act Up by Jim Hubbard (USA, 2011), about the history of Act Up, the American group founded to combat discriminatory policies against AIDS patients; and Vito by Jeffrey Schwarz (USA, 2011), about the story of Vito Russo, a cinephile and tireless activist for gay rights until his premature death from AIDS in 1990.

Europa Multiclub, together with Sauna Apollion and Skyline, clubs affiliated with Arcigay, have created, in agreement with Circolo Mario Mieli, an STD prevention campaign that will launch on Friday the 30th at MUCCASSASSINA. We have created signs and brochures and scheduled a series of appointments throughout the year with doctors and health workers who will come to the clubs to provide information and training to our members. Furthermore, Europa Multiclub has made a doctor available from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Saturday, December 1st, to clarify and explain to each member in attendance how to protect themselves from STDs. We will also distribute a free pack of 5 condoms and 5 single-dose gels, as well as the "Ready for Action" brochure produced by Anlaids, to all members who come to visit us. We will also ask members in attendance to complete a questionnaire to determine how many of them have adequate knowledge of STDs and how to protect themselves. The Pansexual Movement of Siena, in collaboration with the Provincial Arci and the SCORA (Standing Committee on Reproductive Health, Including AIDS) area of the local Siena branch of SISM (Italian Secretariat of Medical Students), organized a two-day event for the WAD.
On Friday, November 30th, we have chosen to screen videos on HIV/AIDS at universities (San Miniato and Le Scotte), organized by SISM. Following this, on December 1st, we will be promoting and holding an information stand from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Piazza Indipendenza (Siena city center) to distribute condoms and raise funds for ANLAIDS. Following the stand, volunteers from the three associations will gather in Siena's Piazza del Campo at 3:00 p.m. to form a human red ribbon in the square (a flash mob). In the afternoon, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., the results of the questionnaire on HIV awareness among the citizens of Siena and the Province will be analyzed and discussed at the Arcigay Siena headquarters (Via Roma 77, Metrocubo). The debate will be led and facilitated by SISM and Arcigay volunteers. At the end of the day, at 8:00 PM, we'll all gather at the Termini bar for a "condom" aperitif. World AIDS Day, observed annually on December 1st, is dedicated to raising awareness of the global AIDS epidemic caused by the spread of the HIV virus. Since 1981, AIDS has killed over 25 million people, becoming one of the most destructive epidemics in recorded history.
THE SITUATION Epidemiological data for the Piedmont Region published by SEREMI (Regional Epidemiological Service) on the spread of HIV/AIDS continue to be worrisome. Since 1999, approximately 4,000 people living in Piedmont, 300 per year, have discovered they have contracted HIV. In 2011, there were a total of 262 new diagnoses of HIV infection, and 68 diagnoses of the disease (AIDS). The number of new HIV diagnoses in Piedmont and the related incidence rates are stable, with a decrease only in the last year. In 2011, among the new cases diagnosed with HIV/AIDS infection, males represented approximately 741 TP3T of the total. HIV/AIDS in Piedmont, as at the national and European levels, is transmitted sexually in 3 out of 4 cases. The number of people in our region who are diagnosed too late is still very high in Piedmont, either because they already have full-blown AIDS, or because the HIV infection has progressed to the point of compromising the success of treatment. In 2011, 36% of people newly diagnosed with HIV were diagnosed late. Among new diagnoses (men), the data relating to HIV infection among gay/bisexual men is significantly increasing. And precisely among new HIV diagnoses, the prevalence is particularly high among young gay or bisexual men (2/3) under the age of 24. It should be noted, however, that the gay and bisexual population has become more sensitized over time than the heterosexual population, and therefore they are the ones who undergo more tests at the specialized centers for sexually transmitted infections in the Region. On average, the gay/bisexual population is diagnosed earlier than the heterosexual population.
THE INITIATIVES: To this end, Arcigay "Ottavio Mai" of Turin will begin a series of training sessions on sexual education in high schools in Turin and the province, starting in January, in collaboration with CeSeDi of the province of Turin, under the coordination of the Council for the Secularity of Institutions. The program will specifically address the different transmission routes of sexually transmitted diseases, their manifestations, diagnosis, and appropriate behavior toward partners. Arcigay continues its health information program for young people, which began with a program in high schools with Anpas Piemonte. On the night of December 30th, Arcigay Turin, along with the other associations of the Turin Pride Coordination, will participate in the evening THE NIGHT OF THE RED RIBBON: a special night opening at the Amedeo di Savoia. From 9 pm on Friday 30 November 2012, the Outpatient Clinics in Pavilion C Rudigoz will be open during the night until 6 am the following morning, providing informal access to infectious disease counselling, rapid HIV testing and tests for sexually transmitted infections. Arcigay Torino will be present with its own stand and information material. On December 1, 2012, from 5 to 7 p.m., Arcigay “Ottavio Mai” will hold an informational and in-depth meeting on HIV/AIDS for its members and anyone interested, at the Arcigay Recreation Club “Sauna 011” in Via Messina 5d (Sala Rossa): the regional situation, existing antivirals, future prospects, testimonies, and more. This will be followed by an ALTRA SPONDA aperitif at the Zero bar in Via Vanchiglia 0, corner of Piazza Vittorio, with games and prizes to raise funds for future health campaigns. The December 1st initiatives don't end there: on December 1st, the Association will participate in the event organized by the Tesso Association with Circoscrizione 5, which will be held from 3 to 6 pm at Via Giachino 55/a. On December 4th, 2012, Arcigay Turin will screen the film "Loggerheads," written and directed by Tim Kirkman, for its members at the Arcigay Recreation Center "Sauna 011" Sala Rossa. This is the message of the posters that will be displayed on Friday, November 30th, and Saturday, December 1st, at the Teatro Palamostre in Udine for World AIDS Day by Arcigay and Arcilesbica di Udine, coinciding with the play "Imitation of Death," performing at 9 pm as part of the "Contatto" season of the CSS Teatro stabile di innovazione del Friuli Venezia Giulia. "Thanks to the precious opportunity that the CSS has offered us," explains Giacomo Deperu, president of Arcigay Udine, "condoms are entering cultural venues to escape the catacombs of shame.
