Arcigay: Protests in front of the Curia are prohibited.

It is with great sadness that we must announce that the Trieste Police Headquarters has denied us the right to demonstrate today in front of the Curia against the Pope's homophobic statements. This is the second time in a month that they have moved our demonstration without any room for negotiation. We will not accept the compromise of demonstrating in another square; it would be a further affront to our dignity, following the serious statements of the highest representative of the Catholic Church against homosexual families. Our demonstration made sense in front of that seat of ecclesiastical power, which, sadly, is capable of influencing the democratic life of our city. The official reason from the Police Headquarters is that we could disrupt public order and safety. The gay movement in Italy, as in the rest of the world, has always demonstrated peacefully: and so we wanted to do, but we are being prevented. Tomorrow there will be no demonstration in Cavana or anywhere else in the city; We will not be able to express our outrage at what we have been told; we will not be able to exercise that fundamental democratic right, which consists in criticizing and peacefully expressing one's thoughts. In Italy, we homosexuals have no rights, not protected as individuals or couples, and now they are taking away even our right to demonstrate. A press conference has been scheduled for 2:30 pm at Caffè Verdi.
