SALERNOPRIDE 2025

EXIST R-ESIST

POLITICAL DOCUMENT

The complexity of current events poses unprecedented challenges to the LGBTQIA+ community, organizations, and communities as a whole. The rise of right-wing governments in many countries in Europe and around the world, the connection and sometimes overlap between these leaders and profit and wealth lobbies, calls into question democratic processes, the protection of the most fragile and vulnerable, and the very principles of democracy; principles and practices that have determined eighty years of peace on our continent and are now being called into question. Furthermore, the closeness between these leaders and autocracies, oligarchies, and the most hegemonic forms of power and government is also based on the dissemination of highly discriminatory messages and choices that violate essential rights and are oriented toward hatred towards minorities, diversity, and foreigners.

The dark thread that binds the language of Putin, Trump, Meloni, Orban, and so many others threatens people's ability to enjoy their loved ones and pursue fulfillment in life. Faced with this threat, societies appear divided, frayed, and incapable of mounting a mass response. Even opposition parties in various countries appear to be struggling to build political and administrative platforms capable of providing alternative responses to people's fears and needs. The spread of economic and social poverty is a fact we cannot underestimate.

In our Southern Italy, the crisis of associations, the massive emigration of younger generations, and the challenges of life and work seem to be leading to a lack of participation in public life and in community struggles. The LGBTQIA+ community also appears disinterested and victimized by the illusion of taking for granted acquired rights, which are being eroded and challenged day after day by the national government, its policies, and the divisive, discriminatory, and hateful messages that flood the media every day. Despite this, a significant majority of communities of people and organizations exist and persist, striving daily to weave together networks of commitment, advocacy, protection, and beauty.

Pride, today more than ever, remains an indispensable pillar of the LGBTQIA+ movement and, more generally, of the struggle for social and civil rights. In recent years, the Pride Wave has been the largest mobilization society has managed to mount on issues of equality in our country, though without overlooking the risk of Pride being subsumed by profit-driven mechanisms and the logic of the market and communication, with all the distortions this can entail. Nonetheless, given the necessary balance between political demands, distancing from the mechanisms and logics of power, and the visibility of the demonstration, Pride remains the most important place and opportunity to raise awareness and reclaim a space for minorities to exist and to assert social and civil rights.

Salerno Pride has always been an opportunity for local organizations, institutions, and organizations to come together to address the concerns, needs, and desires of our community and to raise awareness of the social, political, and economic issues affecting our country, Europe, and the world. Salerno Pride is now the most popular and colorful mass event in our province, a precious asset that we believe should be preserved, expanded, and consolidated with the participation of everyone.

Salerno Pride aims to bring the issue of peace to the forefront of public attention, at a time when wars are raging on every continent and the arms race threatens to turn back the clock to a time of division, fear, and hostility between nations. Peace for Ukraine, crushed by imperialist and colonial logic. Peace for the people of Gaza, victims of a daily tragedy to which we cannot become accustomed, and for which we demand from our governments a stubborn commitment to end the suffering and deaths of innocent people and return to a debate that centers on the dignity and right of Palestine to be recognized as a free, independent, and respected state within its own borders.

We demand that Israel restore respect for international law and hold it accountable for its continued attacks on the Palestinian population and the destruction of Gaza. The right to defense cannot exceed the limits of proportionality and cannot become a reprisal against hospitals, children, and innocent civilians.

Salerno Pride 2025 aims to place the issues of rights and equality back at the center of local public debate, starting with democratic, constitutional, anti-fascist, and anti-racist principles and values. To this end, we once again call on local governments to promote municipal police regulations that limit the use of public spaces by organizations and demonstrations that invoke ideologies and content contrary to democratic and anti-fascist principles.

Salerno Pride 2025 aims to be a demonstration against all forms of physical oppression, a moment to assert the right to self-determination and to organize one's emotional life, the right to sexual and reproductive health, and the right to an informed and personal choice regarding abortion and end-of-life care. We call for increasingly effective policies, services, and concrete initiatives to combat violence against women, and to raise awareness and promote healthy relationships, starting with the younger generations.

Salerno Pride 2025 advocates for the right to health and equal access to care for all, the right to education and access to training. We advocate and fight for the right to stable and secure employment for all, with particular attention to women and LGBTQIA+ people.

We demand concrete policies and administrative decisions to combat homosexuality, transphobia, and lesbophobia, starting with programs in schools of all levels, and including awareness-raising, training, and information initiatives for employees of public institutions, the workplace, employers' organizations, and social and sports settings. We demand policies and awareness-raising initiatives to combat widespread transphobic discrimination that impedes access to legal and healthcare services, access to the labor market, and a dignified life for trans* people, women, and victims of trafficking. Trafficked people experience exploitation and carry profound vulnerabilities and histories of abuse and violence. They experience firsthand social prejudice, the denial of their fundamental rights, exclusion, and invisibility, making them easy prey to exploitation and hatred. In the face of this, we cannot remain silent.

We demand dignity and rights for foreigners arriving in our country, victims of violence and fleeing war and famine. We demand policies of inclusion and access to services for them and their foreign families, and concrete access to the right to asylum and all forms of protection for migrants.

We call for greater attention in public policies, in social and cultural debate, to the issues of climate change and environmental protection, to energy saving and the conscious use of resources, and to the possibility of leaving future generations a healthy and habitable planet for all living species.

Based on these demands, we invite the provincial community—individuals, organizations, associations, the world of culture and sport, local institutions, and the business community—to join us in the march on June 28, 2025, to give substance and voice to these demands.
