Regional anti-homophobia law in the chamber for final vote. Omphalos: Now is the time for accountability.

[:it]PERUGIA – After almost 10 years since its first presentation and 3 different councils, the regional law against homophobia and transphobia The bill has been brought to the Umbria Regional Assembly for a final vote. After the conclusion of the Third Committee's work and months of delays and delays, the bill has finally been placed on the first agenda item for the Tuesday, March 14th session.

Omphalos, who contributed to the drafting of the bill since its initial presentation in 2007, has never stopped calling for its discussion in the Chamber, appealing over the past ten years to the majorities and minorities that have occupied Palazzo Cesaroni. In the last regional elections, the coalition that supported President Marini made a specific commitment in its government program, and Tuesday's session will be the opportunity to finally fulfill it and honor a pact made first and foremost with the voters of our region.

«The time has come for the councilors of the Umbrian legislative assembly to take full responsibility for the vote – declares Stefano Bucaioni, president of Omphalos For too long, this very important law has been kept locked away, allowing regional politicians to avoid taking a clear stance on the matter. The time for ambiguity is over., Starting Tuesday, we will know who believes that violence against homosexual and transgender people is an injustice that must no longer be tolerated. and those who, in the name of imposing a single model, want to continue to support and incite discrimination and violence."»

«On Tuesday we will be at the Regional Council to attend the discussion and final vote on the text – Bucaioni continues We will be in the stands because we want the councilors, in their speeches, to remember that they are discussing and voting on a law that affects the lives of each and every one of us. And through our presence, we will be there to support the victims of violence and homophobia, those who have suffered and continue to suffer discrimination in their families, at school, in the workplace, and even those who, sadly, have not been able to bear that burden.»

Omphalos also wants to address a special appeal to minority councilors. To the Five Star Movement, that in examining and voting on this law, they should not be trapped by mechanisms of sterile political adversarialism, typical of the very party culture they are fighting, but should instead address the merits of the issue, demonstrating that the movement's foundations are anchored in a culture of rights, equality, and the fight against discrimination. Finally, to the center-right councilors, that they should raise their gaze to Europe and draw inspiration from the European liberal right, which has so often supported and continues to support the fight against violence and oppression of LGBTI minorities. The fight against homophobia is not an issue for one political faction, but for all those who care about the civil evolution of this society.

«With their eyes fixed on the work of the regional assembly there will not only be homosexual and transsexual people but the entire regional community – concludes Lorenzo Ermenegildi, secretary of Omphalos – Because this law has the potential to make our region a more welcoming place and to reaffirm the culture of human and civil rights as an essential prerequisite for a country that wants to return to growth. The text, in fact, addresses of prevention, equality and respect, values that must be the foundation of our society, and which must be forcefully reaffirmed when a minority suffers violence and discrimination, for the good of the entire community."»
