THE RESISTANCE DENIED
by FORTUNATO CALVINO
(3rd Edition “Carlo Annoni” International Playwriting Award 2020)
edited by: Antinoo Arcigay Naplesi
“THE RESISTANCE DENIED”, winner of the 2020 Carlo Annoni Playwriting Prize, focuses on Arcangelo, a partisan in Naples during the Four Days of Naples and its Resistance, who recounts his youth in arms to his nephew. Arcangelo evokes the afterthoughts of those who fought against the Nazis in an unequal struggle; the dead and those who survived captivity. But above all, those who fought for freedom: among them many women and femminielli, like Mariasole. Arcangelo and Mariasole love each other, and will fight together to liberate the city from the Germans. In a finale with heroic overtones.
La Resistenza Degata, staged at the Campania Teatro Festiva, acclaimed by critics and audiences, represents an international unicum in remembering the leading role of women and homosexuals, transsexuals, and "femminielli" people, long guiltily forgotten by history.
“This text by Calvino absolutely must be performed, telling us about one of the most beautiful chapters in our city's history: those Four Days that allowed Naples to free itself, the first city in the world, from Nazi-Fascist violence. Freedom was achieved thanks to the city's political intelligence and the heroic actions of men, women, and "femminielli," all united to stop the barbarity of Fascism and Nazism. The text reveals the precious stories of the partisan Antonio Amoretti, the decisive role of women during the Resistance, and the decisive role of the female component of our beloved city. The right to remember, to preserve the memory and pass it on through time, of those Four Days is vital for Naples' future, and it tells us about Naples' unique capacity for resistance and its free spirit, a city capable of absorbing everything like a sponge, yet capable of resisting when threatened, a city that resists every day, despite its profound contradictions.” Comment Antonello Sannino, Secretary of Antinoo Arcigay Naples.

Reason for the 2020 "CARLO ANNONI" Award
An original and meaningful play centered on Arcangelo, a partisan in Naples during the resistance years who decides to tell his nephew about his youth in arms. Arcangelo is surrounded by characters captured in their Neapolitan dimension and linked to devotional expressions in a Neapolitan atmosphere that, in that dramatic context, remains unchanged. All this is beautifully delineated by the reflections of so many who fought against the Nazi enemy in an unequal struggle: men and women stunned by alarm sirens, bomb blasts, buried alive in shelters or cellars; by the evocation of those who died and those who survived captivity, and of those who armed themselves and fought for freedom. Many, but especially women and femminielli like Mariasole and Cecata, almost claim a new life tinged with romance: Arcangelo and Mariasole love each other. But in her final endeavor, Mariasole dies: the plot ends with a sacrificial finale and endows the femminiello lover/beloved with heroic connotations. THE JURY OF THE “CARLO ANNONI” AWARD.
