A serious and ideological choice was made to negotiate and then retract Lazio Region President Francesco Rocca's sponsorship of Rome Pride, one of the most important and well-attended events in Italy.
Like every year, hundreds of thousands of people from across Lazio will take to the streets on Saturday to demonstrate for civil rights. On Saturday, we will be able to walk the streets of our city knowing that, for the first time in the last 13 years, the Lazio Region will not be present.
A reversal, made on the fly, which once again demonstrates the importance of knowing how to weigh our words and decisions: let's look beyond our own borders, to European capitals like Madrid, Paris, and Stockholm, and ask ourselves whether local institutions would ever deny patronage to Pride. We know, however, which nations are fighting to hold a Pride parade. In civilized countries, institutions support the demands for civil rights.
