Arcigay: Gay marriage and rights, Europe calls on us to break the political stalemate.

Overnight, the French Senate approved the first article of the bill on access to same-sex marriage. Yesterday, the Slovenian Constitutional Court declared an inheritance law unconstitutional because it did not guarantee stable gay couples the same inheritance rights as heterosexual de facto couples.

While Europe continues to grind out rights, Italy is sitting idly by in an unprecedented political stalemate. As soon as Parliament resumes its work, it will finally have to assume responsibility for bridging the gap between us and the most mature democracies. Numerous bills have already been submitted to both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate and are ready for discussion and swift approval.

And our delay is entirely political; on a social level, the country, according to all statistics, overwhelmingly approves of equal rights for gays and lesbians.

Flavio Romani, president of Arcigay
