GOVERNMENT CRISIS, ARCIGAY: "IN A TIME OF RESPONSIBILITY, RIGHTS SHOULD NOT BE USED AS BARGAINING PRODUCTS."“
Bologna, January 18, 2021 – “Like everyone else, we are following the government crisis with apprehension as it unfolds, hoping for the stability that is essential for the country's survival during these months of the pandemic,” said Gabriele Piazzoni, general secretary of Arcigay. He continues: "This is the time for responsibility, and we cannot help but join those who are now calling for a rapid resolution to the crisis affecting the government. However, the emergency does not nullify politics, its impetus and its burdens: we need a stable government, but we also need clear objectives that this government must set itself, along with clear timelines for achieving them. And in times of pandemic, these objectives must address inequalities, how to bridge them, and how to reverse the curve that describes the country's decline in terms of social and civil rights. Furthermore, government stability must not be a negotiating table where, in exchange for votes of confidence, the process of parliamentary work is changed, as is rumored in some behind-the-scenes news. To be more explicit: confidence must not be traded for the cover-up or slowdown of the law against homotransphobia, for example. Government and Parliament are distinct powers; each must be able to assert its own autonomy and its own paths," concludes Piazzoni.
