Gianpaolo Silvestri has died. ARCIGAY expresses its condolences.

Bologna, November 2, 2024 – “We are saddened to learn of the passing of

"Gianpaolo Silvestri, activist, former parliamentarian, and one of the founders of Arcigay," said Gabriele Piazzoni, Secretary General of Arcigay. "Gianpaolo's life, in every aspect—as a journalist, activist, and parliamentarian—has always been a testament to a tenacious commitment to the fight for human and civil rights. In 2007, during the Prodi government, he was among the key figures in the parliamentary battle for the approval of the law on international protection, the first to recognize the status of persecuted LGBTI people fleeing homophobic countries. This measure has brought thousands of people to safety over the years. Even after his parliamentary stint, Gianpaolo continued to provide his valuable contribution, diligently and generously, to the association, guiding the vision of a new generation of activists. Today is a sad day for us, one of great pain. Our deepest sympathies go out to all those who loved him," concluded Piazzoni.
