We are very, very concerned about the ongoing discussion on the nominations of future ministers, in particular with regard to the delegations for Equal Opportunities and Rights, which are of crucial importance to us.
We are well aware that the responsibilities for Equal Opportunities and Rights, usually unattractive to ministerial candidates, are now a tempting prospect. Thanks to those who have recently assumed that responsibility, a concrete commitment to actively combat homophobia and transphobia on many fronts has begun. The National Strategy for the Fight against Homophobia, developed by UNAR with the active collaboration of Italian LGBT associations, is an important tool in this regard.
We know that there are political forces within the majority that will support the new government that are determined to oppose positive action in support of homosexual and transgender people, hindering any project that aims to restore their social visibility and dignity.
We therefore urge the Prime Minister-designate not to allow himself to be influenced by backward, dangerous, anti-European positions that seek to undermine our secular Republic, founded on the equality of its citizens and non-discrimination. We remind Matteo Renzi of the commitments he made during the primaries regarding the need to legislate in favor of the families of homosexual and transgender people. .
We trust that the well-being and respect of all Italian citizens will be considered a priority by the new government and that nothing will be done to halt or roll back the evident institutional progress underway to not only improve the living conditions of LGBTQ people but also create and strengthen the idea of an inclusive, respectful, and open society.
