The provisional consolidated version of the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe (in Italian) states, in Article II-21: "Any discrimination based on any ground such as sex, race, colour, ethnic or social origin, genetic features, language, religion or belief, political or any other opinion, membership of a national minority, property, birth, disability, age or national origin shall be prohibited."sexual orientation.""
This is no small feat. Not only because sexual orientation is among the categories on the basis of which any discrimination is prohibited, but also because the Italian version of a European law (and what a law!) finally uses the correct term, "sexual orientation," instead of the horrid "sexual tendencies" used in EU documents until recently.
Thanks to Arcigay's reports to the Italian Terminology Service at the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union, an end has been put to the use of a translation that was, to say the least, unfortunate, both semantically and in terms of the usage it would most likely have authorized and even encouraged.
