Open letter to Mauro Mazza, director of Tg2 Rai
Dear Director,
Mauro Mazza
Today's 1pm news program Tg2 described how “deviant” San Vittore prison doctor Dario Foà, director of the prison penal service of the Milan local health authority, was savagely murdered in recent days.
The words used in the news report on the tragic murder surprised and saddened us. “He wasn't just involved in deviance for work... he was also attracted to it, to the point of not considering it dangerous to be alone with a man he didn't even know on a country lane on the outskirts of Milan.” what was said in reference to Dario Foà.
Where, dear editor, is the "deviance"? In being available for sexual intercourse with someone you've just met? In doing it in a car? In being homosexual?
Please explain, so that the many Italians who are homosexual, or who for whatever reason have happened to do so in a car, or have been available for sexual intercourse with someone they recently met, perhaps that same evening, know whether they are considered "deviant" or "attracted to deviance" by Tg2.
Come on information professionals We expect that, when faced with a murder, they will be guided first and foremost by respect for the victims, their families, and, why not, by the respect and interest of the public.
Crimes like the one that struck Dario Foà often originate from a sense of guilt, ignorance, deep-rooted prejudice in the killers' native culture. These factors also risk being fueled by news reports like the one broadcast on Tg2 today.
Cordially,
Sergio Lo Giudice
