ANDER by Roberto Castón (Spain, 2009)
Ander, a farmer in his forties, lives with his sister Arantxa and his elderly mother in a remote
valley of the Basque Country. His is a monotonous life, filled only by work on the farm and a
employment at the local bicycle factory. It won't be long before Arantxa gets married and so
Ander finds himself alone having to take care of his stubborn mother. One day Ander has an accident and
He breaks his leg, which will remain in a cast for two months. Against his mother's wishes, the family
decides to hire a Peruvian immigrant, José, to help her around the house and at work.
Josè's presence soon disrupts the family balance and Ander's routine.
Like 80 Egunean, Ander, also of Basque production, investigates with particular skill the relationships and
social dynamics.
Presented at the Berlin Film Festival in 2009, it won the MIX Festival in Milan in 2010.
Ander is the first feature film by Galician Spanish director Roberto Castón, following some
short film.
