Homophobia, Arcigay to Democratic Party MPs: "Listen to Sel and M5S's appeal: extend the aggravating circumstances without sub-amendments."“

Bologna, September 19, 2013 – Statement by Flavio Romani, president of Arcigay: "We are following the current debate in the Chamber of Deputies on the law against homotransphobia with great concern. The amendment proposed by the Democratic Party (PD) that would have extended the aggravating circumstances of the Mancino law now contains an unacceptable sub-amendment that defines persons, roles, and places of immunity from that law. This is a very serious eventuality that explicitly upholds the principle of discrimination, exposing schools and educational institutions to this calamity. Rather than seize the opportunity to project Italy toward a European model, this law risks certifying the backwardness of this country, institutionalizing discrimination and infamy, and creating safe havens where hatred can be cultivated. The Democratic Party should distance itself from this approach and embrace the full support that SEL and the Five Star Movement are offering for the possibility of passing a good law.".
