Bologna, February 28, 2020 – "We welcome the news of the swift scheduling of the bill on homotransphobia, which will be presented to the Chamber of Deputies, after completing its passage through the Justice Committee, on March 30th," said Gabriele Piazzoni, Secretary General of Arcigay. He continues: "The tight deadline, as the rapporteur, the Honorable Alessandro Zan, stated, is a sign of broad support for the law, and as such, we welcome it with optimism. We equally hope that a basic text will soon be made public, a synthesis of the various submitted texts, highlighting the most effective and progressive aspects. It will also serve as a basis for public debate, open to the improvements that the chamber will be able to bring to light, selected not on the basis of ideological positioning or bargaining between the parties, but with a view to approving the law that best meets the needs of combating and preventing homotransphobia. This law has been long-awaited and has already seen several false starts in the past: let the past, then, serve as a lesson for us and place upon everyone the responsibility of approving a text that is adequate and meets the expectations that LGBTI people, who are the daily targets of homotransphobia, have long had," concludes Piazzoni.
