From the streets to rights: Arcigay Rieti LGBT+ is here!
Despite the current difficulties, especially those caused by the Covid pandemic, on Saturday, October 17, Arcigay brought rights to 60 squares in many Italian cities in support of the law against homolesbobitransphobia and misogyny. The demonstration, called #DallaParteDeiDiritti, also saw the participation of many associations from Rieti and the surrounding province, including ARCI, ANPI, Rete Studenti Medi, Controvento, Cittadinanza Attiva, NOME Officina Politica, Sabina Radicale, and the anti-violence centers Il Nido di ANA and Angelita.
The LGBT+ community has been waiting 25 years for a law that was supposed to be debated on October 20th, but the vote on it has been postponed again. The law on homolesbobitransphobia includes Article 3, promoted by the center-right and also supported by the majority, which absolutely must be amended or eliminated as it could produce dangerous effects, even potentially leading to a legal situation that is in some ways worse than the current one. If today, in fact, say for example “gays are sick and ”inferiors“ is neither permitted nor prohibited by law, tomorrow it could be ”authorized“ according to the law, for ”free expression of opinions”: freedom does not mean authorizing one to offend women and men who demand equal dignity and rights.
