HOMOTRANSPHOBIA, ARCIGAY: "SCHEDULE THE LAW OR WE'LL TAKE TO THE STREETS. THE LEAGUE HAS A PROBLEM WITH LGBTI PEOPLE AND WITH DEMOCRACY."

Bologna, April 7, 2021 – “Today, the Senate Justice Committee is convening again, after we have long awaited the scheduling of the law against homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, and ableism,” said Gabriele Piazzoni, general secretary of Arcigay. He continues: "A law held hostage, in particular by the president of the commission, the Northern League's Andrea Ostellari, in an unconventional and, in our opinion, extremely serious manner. If by the end of today we have not resolved this issue, we will have to acknowledge that the League and its parliamentarians have a problem not only with LGBTI people but also with the democratic rules of Parliament and the institutional structure described in the Constitutional Charter. Because here it is not just a question of being against that text, but rather of preventing its discussion altogether: this approach overrides every norm or practice of the legislative body, creating a serious and very dangerous precedent to which we draw everyone's attention. Meanwhile, outside, there is a country that is mobilizing and loudly demanding the approval of that text. In the last few days alone, several public figures have spoken out to join this mobilization, to stand on the side of rights alongside the activists who have been waging this battle for years: Fedez, Chiara Ferragni, Francesca Michielin, Mara Venier, Alessandro Gassman, Paola Turci, Michele Bravi, Piero Pelù, Elodie, Levante, Mahmood, Carlo Cracco, Nicola Piovani, Maurizio Costanzo, Barbara D'Urso, Costantino della Gherardesca, and Lo Stato Sociale are just some of the artists who have chosen to speak out in support of the law. We would first like to thank them and ask them to help us keep this parliamentary passage under high scrutiny. President Ostellari's anomalous conduct deserves to be closely monitored by the entire country. Because it is in that conduct that the true gag takes shape, the denial of the right to discuss an issue like hate crimes. Ostellari must demonstrate that he is worthy of this country's democratic institutions. Otherwise, in the name and defense of democracy, we will be ready to take to the streets again, as we did last October in 60 Italian cities,“ concludes Piazzoni.
