“Sexual Rights in Tunisia” Giovanni D'Auria's essay is on a theme essential to free self-expression: sexuality. In Tunisia, as in all other places around the world, sex cannot be translated into the single expression, the heterosexual one, that mainstream and political currents would like to impose. In the Maghreb, in fact, there exists a varied, multiple, and multifaceted sexuality that Tunisian Othman defines as erosensuality that is, the set of’homosensualité and of the’hétérosensualité. Despite the fact that homosexuals and disabled people will never become majorities, politicized societies continue to tolerate them in public spaces, imposing a heteronormative vision of life that obscures other truths. For all this, it will be necessary to rewrite the history of rights through less partisan reflections.
Starting from Giovanni D'Auria's essay, the various issues related to sexual rights in Tunisia will be addressed, with particular attention to the condition of LGBT+ people, with contributions from Tunisian scholar Amani Mkouer, Professor Paolo Valerio, Honorary President of the Sinapsi Center and President of the GIC Foundation, and the author of the essay himself.
