TDOV, ARCIGAY: "OUR VISIBILITY IN SUPPORT OF YOUNG TRANS* PEOPLE UNDER ATTACK"“
Bologna, March 30, 2024 – “On March 31st, International Transgender Day of Visibility (TDoV), the day dedicated to promoting the visibility of the trans* community, we have decided to dedicate our visibility to supporting the struggles of trans* youth and their families, the target of a terrible campaign by some media outlets and institutional representatives,” said Christian Cristalli, head of trans* policies in the national secretariat of Arcigay. “For some time now, the entire healthcare system that welcomes and supports young people with gender incongruence has been at the center of an inappropriate and very serious media controversy. On the one hand, it shifts a very delicate discussion into contexts where there is no accurate information and expertise to assess it, and on the other, it undermines the right to healthcare of those individuals and their families, violating even the confidentiality of their healthcare processes. For weeks, these young people have been encountering narratives in newspapers, social media, TV and radio broadcasts that paint them as sick, or abused, or even “guinea pigs.” These narratives are produced by those who call for “psychological support” for them. So we are the ones who say 'hands off the children' - protests Cristalli -, we are the ones who denounce the violence of this debate and its terrible effects on these young people and on the contexts in which they live". On the occasion of the TDoV Arcigay asked people to take a photo of themselves holding a sign with the words 'hands off the children, we say it!' and post it on their social media with the hashtag #identitavalide.
