The smile of Michela Murgia lights up the capital thanks to the project “Remember me as you like” edited by Peter Turano For Arcigay Rome: a 100m2 mural made by the artist Laika, already defined as “the Italian Banksy”.
The work, authorised by the Municipio V of Rome and which appeared on the façade of the Town Hall, is being carried out by the association thanks to the support of Einaudi, Mondadori And Rizzoli (author's publishing houses), and will be inaugurated Thursday, July 11th at 7:00 PM in front of the headquarters of the Municipality V in Via di Torre Annunziata 1 in Rome.
The project was born from the meeting between Peter Turano (Vice President of Arcigay Rome) and the artist Laika1954 and from the common desire to pay homage to the author and intellectual Michela Murgia, who passed away last summer, with a public work in her city.
“The entire city of Rome and the queer community across the country are particularly tied to Michela Murgia, who, in addition to having supported the activities of our association, has carried out fundamental research on queer issues, parenting and families, and patriarchal and homophobic gender violence.” – he declares Peter Turano. “She was, and still is, an irreplaceable reference for all of us. This work is not a holy card, but a gift to the community and the city, to celebrate together a woman who gave us tools and new lenses to interpret our reality and orient ourselves. The response to the right-wing's exploitative attacks is to attend the inauguration.”, concludes Turano.
“Knowing that Michela Murgia is still making so much noise fills me with joy – he declared Laika –; This wall aims to be a ray of light in this dark historical moment, in which attempts are being made to erase the progress made in terms of rights, to hinder every possible step forward.
I won't be lectured by a political group that criticizes a mural while simultaneously working to name an airport after one of the most controversial figures in our country's history.
I ask Pro Vita e Famiglia to smile every now and then: we live in a democracy (for now) and no one will stop you from having an abortion, from getting married and starting a family according to your beliefs. The same freedom must apply to everyone. I dedicate this great work to Michela, who we miss but who is always with us, and to her family. But also to Peter Turano and my team which is my family, 'the one I chose'‘”, concluded the artist.
