ANTI-GENDER RESOLUTION IN THE CHAMBER OF RELATIONS, ARCIGAY: "ITALY LIKE RUSSIA AND HUNGARY. ANOTHER ATTACK ON LGBTQIA+ PEOPLE."“

Bologna, September 12, 2024 – “The attacks on our lives and our identities by this right-wing government continue,” declared Marta Rohani, head of education at Arcigay’s national secretariat. He continues: "A few days after the news of the suicide of a young gay man in Palermo and the homophobic attack on a man in Cremona, the Chamber of Deputies' Culture Committee discussed and approved the Sasso resolution and the Ravetto bill, paving the way for an Italian anti-LGBTI law similar to those passed in Russia and Hungary, which would ban any content related to the so-called 'gender ideology' from schools. So we reiterate," Rohani continues, "gender ideology, cited for the first time in an official document of the Italian parliament, does not exist; it is an invention of the right and ultra-Catholic movements. Instead, there are educational programs on differences, sexuality, and affectivity, launched in some schools, which attempt to instill respect for cultural, ethnic, religious, gender, sexual orientation, and ability differences, as a fundamental element for building an inclusive and democratic society. These differences are valued and not erased, avoiding the logic of a gender division that remains functional only to the patriarchal and oppressive system. The school system plays a crucial role in this process, as it contributes to the education of new generations and the promotion of values of civil coexistence and tolerance. Education about diversity is an internationally recognized initiative, promoted by organizations such as UNESCO, the UN, and the WHO, and has nothing to do with the promotion of so-called "gender ideology." The parliamentary decisions of recent days are yet another exploitation of our lives: they want to convey the idea that we—rather than wars, poverty, or climate disaster—are the problem and danger of our time. It is an act of mass distraction, but it is not harmless; in fact, it is very dangerous because it incites hatred towards LGBTQIA+ people,“ she concludes.
