Ferrara, violence against a transgender inmate in prison. Arcigay expresses solidarity with the victim: "With the security decree, LGBTQIA+ inmates will be increasingly exposed."“

Bologna, July 2, 2025 – “We are following with the utmost attention the very serious case reported by the trans* person who was sexually abused by four cisgender men inside a cell in the Ferrara prison, where she was being held”: this was declared Daniela Lourdes Falanga, from the national secretariat of Arcigay. She continues: “We express our full solidarity with the victim of this inhumane violence. What happened in Ferrara is a symptom of a prison system that fails to protect the most vulnerable, particularly trans* inmates. LGBTQIA+ people in prison often experience multiple discrimination, exposed to physical and psychological violence, and a chronic lack of protection. The recently approved security decree,” Falanga continues, “risks further worsening this already dramatic situation. The introduction of new crimes and harsher penalties will lead to even more critical prison overcrowding, making it impossible to guarantee the fundamental rights and safety of inmates. Furthermore, the security decree penalizes any form of protest within prisons, effectively acting as a deterrent to such complaints. In such a context, violence against minorities risks becoming systematic,” Falanga concludes.
