TDOR SF 2014 from Trans March on Vimeo.
November 20th is celebrated all over the world TDoR, the Transgender Day of Remembrance, to commemorate the victims of anti-transgender hatred, prejudice, and discrimination (transphobia). The event was launched in 1998 by transgender activist Gwendolyn Ann Smith to remember Rita Hester, whose murder in Massachusetts sparked the web project "Remembering Our Dead," and in 1999, a candlelight vigil in San Francisco. Since then, the event has grown to include commemorations in hundreds of cities around the world.
Every year, various cities organize initiatives to commemorate this date, mainly through torchlight processions, sit-ins, and candlelight celebrations.
The Transgender Europe's Trans murder monitoring project Every year, it collects data on the murders of trans people around the world: according to this observatory, 226 names should be added to the list of victims in 2014. The black mark belongs to to Brazil with 113 homicides. The Italian figure for 2014 is not reported, but once again it risks being among the highest in Europe: the press reported last August the case of the murder of a 31-year-old transsexual in Salerno. That single case alone would be enough to bring the number of murders of transgender people in Italy from 2008 to today to 28, a figure second only to Turkey and which must be added to the countless attempted murders and daily acts of violence.
