With a resolution passed unanimously on Thursday afternoon, the Egna City Council took another decisive step toward joining the RE.A.DY. network. Along with the resolution, the network's Charter of Intent was also signed, the National Network of Public Administrations Against Discrimination on the Basis of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity. Centaurus Arcigay Alto Adige Südtirol, which supports the network's local institutions, also expressed its satisfaction with the initiative. The municipal press release follows.
Egna, March 26, 2021 – "The entire city council is convinced that this is an important step toward tolerance and anti-discrimination," says Mayor Karin Jost. Joining the RE.A.DY network means participating in a space for sharing and exchanging best practices to protect the human rights of LGBT+ people and promote a social culture of respect and appreciation for differences. By joining the network, founded in 2006 in Turin, Egna also intends to address the needs of LGBT+ people, who often experience discrimination, and promote a social climate of respect and discussion free from prejudice.
In South Tyrol, the municipalities of Appiano, Bolzano, Bressanone, Caldaro, and Merano, along with the Province, are already part of the RE.A.DY network. They collaborate in a working group supported by Centaurus Arcigay Alto Adige Südtirol, the most representative organization working for equal opportunities for LGBT+ people. "This is an important signal for the fight against discrimination and the valorization of differences. In South Tyrol, there is still a lot of invisibility. Now, goodwill must be followed by concrete action. Centaurus is offering its experience," comments Andreas Unterkircher, president of Centaurus Arcigay Alto Adige Südtirol.
In recent weeks, the network's membership, proposed by Green Party Councilor Sadbhavana Pfaffstaller through a motion in the City Council, was approved by an overwhelming majority of Egna's councilors and has now been made official with a resolution by the council. At the same time, the network's charter of intent was signed. With the documents in hand, the City Council will now formalize its membership at the National Secretariat in Turin and begin organizing the first initiatives, which will be overseen by Roberta Decarli, Councilor for Equal Opportunities, together with the councilors of the Equal Opportunities Commission of the Bassa Atesina area.
