Arcigay recently received news that the LGBT Pride Parade in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, long scheduled for last Sunday, September 20, 2009, was cancelled. Despite months of preparation and careful planning to design an event that would be safe for all participants, A few days ago, the police decided not to grant permission for the procession in the city center. and pressured the organizers to cancel the event, refusing to take on the responsibility of policing and maintaining order during the demonstration.
""This is very serious news" – comments Aurelio Mancuso, national president of Arcigay – "It represents a clear violation of the freedom of each individual to peacefully demonstrate for their rights.""
Following the appeal of the organizers of the Belgrade Pride, Arcigay joined the Serbian associations in protesting against this decision and sent a series of letters asking the President of the Republic of Serbia, the Prime Minister and the Mayor of Belgrade to personally commit to ensuring that the demonstration can take place as soon as possible.
