BRUSSELS – "Sinking the anti-homophobia law was a step backwards for Italy.". UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, accuses Italy. And he denounces Parliament's decisions, which fail to take into account the violence to which homosexuals are often subjected: "Full protection is needed for them."".
Navi Pillay has entered the already heated debate that arose following the rejection of a law that would have introduced an aggravating circumstance for crimes committed against people targeted because of their sexual orientation.
""Homosexuality and homosexuals are criminalized in some countries – said the UN commissioner – but we cannot ignore that minority groups, and among them homosexuals, They are subjected not only to violence, but to discrimination in various aspects of their lives.""According to Pillay, who was in Brussels for the opening of the new UN office for human rights in the European Union, "full protection" for homosexuals is therefore necessary.
Navi Pillay had already openly criticized the Italian government for its decisions regarding the rejection of migrants. Today, the Commissioner for Human Rights returned to the security problem in Italy, once again criticizing the aggravating circumstance of illegal immigration, which is alleged against illegal immigrants who commit crimes. "This is discrimination. For illegal immigrants," Pillay emphasized, "there cannot be a suspension of human rights. To punish the same crime, there should be the same rules for everyone. I do not rule out," the Commissioner concluded, "that the UN might ask Italy to amend the law.".
