Out. Discrimination against homosexuals

United International Publishers, 2012

In conversation with the author Elisa Grando, journalist, and Laura Scarmoncin, Circolo Arcobaleno Arcigay Arcilesbica Trieste

Is it possible to be gay in Italy? Maura Chiulli's account of "diversity" captures an Italy where ignorance, sexism, and discrimination are the only colors. The Bel Paese proves itself backward compared to the world and Europe, incapable of guaranteeing rights to its homosexual citizens. Men and women who live, love, and pay taxes even for those who insult them in the streets, mock them from political platforms, and attack them in schools and on city streets. The testimonies collected clash with the very idea of "civilization" and inspire indignation over a new "Gay Pride.".

Maura Chiulli is President of Arcigay Rimini and National Culture Director for Arcigay. For this association, she also oversees education, youth, and gender policies. Born in 1981, she is primarily an actress and screenwriter, but she also works as a writer and literature expert. After debuting in 2008 with the novel Piacere Maria, in 2010 she published her first true "white paper" on homophobic attacks, provocatively titled Damned Froci & Damned Lesbians.
