Bologna, March 9, 2015 – “We welcome the Italian government's adoption of the UN recommendations regarding the rights of LGBT people, but as always, we await further evidence.” Flavio Romani, president of Arcigay, cautiously comments on the Renzi government's openness internationally regarding equal marriage and legislation against homotransphobia. "The commitments made by Italy," says Romani, "set out objectives we absolutely agree with: they include specific regulations to combat homophobia and the extension of civil marriage to all couples, including same-sex couples. We hope this is truly the goal and that, for example, the principle of equality is not reduced to partial and discriminatory formulas, but rather remains the guiding light of this discussion. And above all, we expect, after years of fruitless announcements, that the phase of words can be concluded and we can finally move on to action, because time, when it comes to fundamental rights, is not a secondary issue. Therefore, the Government must take responsibility not only for the objectives," Romani concludes, "but also for the urgency with which they must be achieved.".
