Arcigay Migranet: A national network program for LGBTI migrants and asylum seekers.
Arcigay's work with and for LGBTI migrants, and especially with LGBTI asylum seekers, has its roots in 2008, with the “Immigration and Homosexuality” project, when Arcigay published the first guides for operators, volunteers, and for migrants themselves (in the fields of health and rights), materials updated and reprinted in 2014.
Since then Many local Arcigay committees, independently or in collaboration with other entities, have opened reception, orientation, and support desks for LGBTI asylum seekers. Through just six reception centers for LGBTI migrants and asylum seekers (Turin, Padua, Modena, Perugia, Naples, Palermo), Arcigay supported 107 and 100 LGBTI asylum seekers with initial orientation activities in 2015 and 2016, respectively. Of these, 70 and 63 received support throughout their asylum application process, and 63 and 56 obtained some form of protection. However, Arcigay has more asylum seeker centers, including in other cities (Milan, Rome, Genoa, etc.).
Today Arcigay launches the Migranet program, which aims to network Arcigay's asylum-seeker help desk system. The program has several goals, including:
- Improve and broaden the support and reception of LGBTI asylum seekers through updating, strengthening and networking the most active branches, also with the involvement and training of new volunteers and the opening of "filter antennas" or new offices in neighboring areas.
- Improving housing capacity for LGBTI people in local SPRAR and CAS systems;
- Improving intercultural understanding and dialogue between LGBTI asylum seekers and the LGBTI community from a generative welfare perspective.
The Migranet program was funded for 2017 thanks to funding from UNAR – National Office against Racial Discrimination as part of a specific public call (funding currently suspended by UNAR).[:en]
