TRANSPHOBIC ARTICLE. ARCIGAY SALERNO: NEWS REPORTS APOLOGIZE TO THE TRANS* COMMUNITY

INTERVENTION REQUESTED FROM THE CAMPANIA JOURNALISTS' ORDER

In an article appearing in the February 6th edition of the newspaper, the alias career approach adopted by some schools in Salerno is attacked, along with the condition of trans* people. The topic is addressed using devaluing, exclusionary, pathologizing, and marginalizing language. Decades of theoretical reflection and advancement of rights are attacked in a stilted tone. This is not an opinion, but a position that distorts reality, sticking a knife in the wound of those, both young and old, who experience discrimination and marginalization. Arcigay Salerno has immediately requested the intervention of the Order of Journalists to protect the local LGBTQIA+ community, trans* people, those working to improve the quality of life of those who attend school, and the profession of journalism, made up of people who do their best and who, we believe, cannot be undermined by those who use the media to express language and positions that are blatantly discriminatory and violate basic standards of professional ethics, good taste, and common sense.
“"We believe that the words used in the article, the way in which the topic is treated, and the arguments presented are profoundly offensive and exclusionary, disrespectful of trans* people, the school community, nor the truth and complexity of the issue being discussed," Rocco Del Regno, President of Arcigay Salerno, said. "We believe that language that addresses the condition of trans* people, regardless of personal opinions, with devaluing, I would say "caricatured," language and tendentious terms that suggest that the trans* condition is a "feeling," that there is a "true" and a "false" sex, that confuses gender identity with sexual identity, that mixes and overlaps different issues to assert a discriminatory thought, seems disrespectful," Rocco Del Regno continued. "For this reason, we decided to contact and request the prompt intervention of the Campania Order of Journalists. The role of the media, in fact, is precious and fundamental in disseminating inclusive language and accurate information. We believe that the professionalism of the category of "Those who work in the information sector are deeply offended. La Cronache, its director, and the entire editorial staff should apologize to the LGBTQIA+ community and to all the people who read the newspaper every day and found themselves reading an article that is incorrect, biased, exploitative, and offensive not only to trans* people but to any person of common sense," concludes Rocco Del Regno.
