Acid and insults against a gay couple, Piazzoni (Arcigay): "The climate is unsustainable, like a 'gay hunt.'" Today, we sent a request for an urgent meeting to the Minister: the government must intervene.“
Bologna, January 17, 2025 – Following the two serious attacks reported in the capital against two gay couples, today the press reports another story of violence, which has been going on for years now, against a young couple who live in an apartment building in eastern Rome, where they have been subjected to serious violence and harassment by a family living across the street. “It is with great concern,” comments Gabriele Piazzoni, general secretary of Arcigay, “that we are witnessing a growing number of violent incidents, perpetrated by individuals and organized groups, against people simply guilty of expressing their gender identity or sexual orientation. These barbaric acts not only threaten the physical safety of those involved, but also undermine the principles of freedom, equal dignity, and respect enshrined in our Constitution.“ "It's a real 'gay-hunting' climate," Piazzoni continues, "that affects the entire LGBTQIA+ community and extends well beyond the capital, spanning the entire country. This phenomenon often reveals the characteristics of actions that aren't spontaneous, but are precisely organized by politically motivated groups that employ complex and persecutory strategies, as is evident, for example, from the numerous acts of vandalism suffered by the Cassero in Bologna, our national headquarters, in recent weeks." "The situation is extremely serious, unprecedented, and the Government is standing idly by. Therefore, today we have sent a request for an urgent meeting to Minister Roccella to forcefully reiterate the need for prompt intervention to protect the safety of LGBTQIA+ citizens. Meanwhile, we invite everyone to join us in the "By Hand, Everywhere" demonstration, called by CIG Arcigay Milano tomorrow at 3:00 PM in Piazza Castello in Milan, because holding hands in Italy today cannot and must not become a danger," concludes Piazzoni.
