The exhibition, set up in the spaces of the Moricino – Borsellino Institute in Piazza Sant'Eligio, will be open to visitors during school hours until June 12th.
“Anyone who is prejudiced is someone who doesn't know how to reason. You guys have tools that my generation didn't have. You can't go wrong.”. With these words Maurizio De Giovanni ('The Bastards of Pizzofalcone' and 'Inspector Ricciardi') returned to school yesterday morning to inaugurate the exhibition entitled 'We are all in the same boat', set up in the spaces of the Institute Moricino – Borsellino in Piazza Sant'Eligio in Naples. The writer ('The Bastards of Pizzofalcone' and 'Inspector Ricciardi') was the featured guest at the vintage toy exhibition curated by the university professor. Vincenzo Capuano. “You look at the world, we didn't look at it. When I was your age, I didn't have the tools available to me today. Television programs for kids started at 5:00 PM and lasted an hour. There were no cell phones and there was no Internet. We didn't understand anything,” De Giovanni declared during the open-door debate at the school. During the meeting, a girl spoke about her experience in front of her classmates and the speakers, describing the toxic bond that she had with her ex-boyfriend: "He wouldn't let me dress the way I wanted and he had my social media passwords, but I couldn't have his. He controlled me. I accepted this situation because I was in love, and when I couldn't take it anymore, I left him." De Giovanni then concluded his speech with a wish and a hope: "It's possible in life to have an opinion on everything. There are very few things that are certainly wrong, but one of them is prejudice. Judgment is made at the end, not before, and let's not forget the prefix 'pre' in the term. Choose to play with what you want and don't be slaves, customers of the ads scrolling on their mobile phones. Be men and women, I hope you make the right choice.".
The initiative was attended by Giuliana Zoppoli, director of ICS Moricino – Borsellino, Mariavalentina Esposito, teacher of ICS Moricino – Borsellino, Antonello Sannino, president of Antinoo Arcigay Naples, Paolo Russo of Scuola Progetto Futuro and Volunteering and Vincenzo Capuano of Tamburo di latta.
The project “Toy, what kind!”
“Can we stop talking about my body now?” This is the question posed by one of the most famous and influential female figures in the world as she showcased her politically correct curvy body on the cover of 'Time' in 2016. She was Miss Barbara Millicent Roberts, better known as Barbie. The stars and stripes doll from Mattel turned 67 on March 9th and became one of the protagonists of 'Giocattolo, che Genre!', the project created on the basis of the Public Notice '‘Culture, what class!'’ of the Municipality of Naples. The project was characterized by seminars and theoretical and practical laboratory meetings in the professional institute G. Rossini, in the Technical Technological Institute Giordano Striano and at the Moricino-Borsellino State Comprehensive Institute. The exhibition ‘'We're all in this together'’, conceived and developed by students, was curated by university professor Vincenzo Capuano, and is aimed at young people, adults, and educators. It does not intend to impose an idea, but rather to suggest food for thought. The intended message is that play should be seen as an act of freedom, knowledge, and skill. It is an attempt to understand the present and break down gender stereotypes. Among the themes discussed during the project is the history of the doll: recounting it metaphorically addresses the history of women and men, to discover how certain models—apparently outdated—still constitute a powerful psychological and cultural legacy and an effective political tool.
The exhibition will be open to visitors in Naples until June 12th, at the “Corradino di Svevia” room of the ICS Campo del Moricino in Piazza S. Eligio, 106. For information and reservations write to [email protected]
The video
During the workshops, the documentary entitled "Giocattolo, che Genre!" was filmed. The short film, screened yesterday morning before the debate, featured students and teachers from middle schools and vocational schools, and features interviews with them. In answering questions, the students focused on how the role of parents significantly influences, and sometimes even discriminates against, childhood play. Fear of prejudice often stems from the family, not the external context.
