Arcigay goes to congress

How can we encourage gays and lesbians to develop a conscious and fulfilling identity? How can we respond to the needs of a rapidly growing gay community? How can we engage with the center-right government in Italy and with European institutions? What contribution can we make to the ongoing debate on globalization?

These will be some of the topics under discussion at the 10th National Congress of Arcigay, which will take place from February 1st to 3rd at the Hotel Savioli Spiaggia in Riccione, under the title "Let's build freedom, let's take back love."“

Approximately 150 delegates will attend the meeting, representing the association's 90 local branches, which has over 100,000 members spread across forty Italian provinces, from Syracuse to Bolzano. This year, the presence of southern branches (Palermo, Catania, Messina, Syracuse, Cosenza, Bari, Lecce, Naples) is significant, a sign of renewed vitality for gay rights in the South.

The conference will be preceded on Friday afternoon by a conference entitled Love Out of the Shadows, featuring sociologists Marzio Barbagli and Asher Colombo from the University of Bologna—authors of the study "Modern Homosexuals," published by Mulino; Chiara Saraceno from the University of Turin, who will present the initial findings of a recently concluded survey of gay men and lesbians in Turin; and psychotherapist Paolo Rigliano, author of "Loves Without Scandal," published by Feltrinelli.

Following the event, a greeting from Riccione's mayor, Daniele Imola, and remarks from the guests. Confirmed attendance includes: Piero Fassino, national secretary of the DS; Laura Balbo, former Minister for Equal Opportunities; Mauro Bulgarelli, Green Party MP; Cinzia Dato, Margherita Senator; and a representative of the Ministry for Equal Opportunities. Popular TV showgirl Platinette will also be speaking.

The press conference to present the Congress is scheduled for Friday, February 1st, at 11:30 a.m.
The meeting will take place at the Hotel Savioli Spiaggia, Via D'Annunzio 6, Riccione. The city's deputy mayor, Loretta Villa, will also be present.
