Today, at the official ceremony at the Risiera di San Sabba for the 68th Anniversary of the Liberation, the Mayor of Trieste, Roberto Cosolini, in his speech, recalled the Nazi-Fascist persecution of those who, due to their political orientation, religious beliefs, or ethnic minority affiliation, were considered "different" and therefore intolerable by a totalitarian state. However, he forgot to mention in this list those who were discriminated against, persecuted, and condemned for their sexual orientation.
To forget, on Liberation Day, the persecution suffered by homosexuals unfortunately means erasing their lives marked by discrimination, exclusion and suffering.
Today, for us lesbians and gay men, Liberation has not yet occurred in Italy: in a country that calls itself free and democratic, we are still not free to form a family, have children, and educate them. For us, Articles 3 and 29 of the Constitution are still barred. Without equality, there is no Liberation!
