At school to get to know each other

The Arcigay Arcilesbica Rainbow Circle of Trieste, in collaboration with Arcigay "Nuovi passi" and Arcilesbica of Udine, for the current school year will propose the project to the high schools of the region “"Getting to Know Each Other at School. Social Isolation, Bullying, and Homophobia: Intervention Strategies in School Settings"”, with the aim of disseminating educational values and practices to prevent, combat, and reduce social prejudice against homosexuals, promoting actions to combat homophobic bullying and suggesting concrete intervention methods to teachers and students.

In relation to this project The Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia has provided a contribution for activities of particular importance, pursuant to art. 8 of Regional Law 12/1995.

The activity will include, for the class that requests it, two two-hour sessions, aimed at students in the third year of secondary schools in Friuli Venezia Giulia on the topic of homophobic bullying and social prejudice against homosexuals. Specifically, the interventions will aim to create a network of solidarity and cooperation within the school community that will help consolidate the school's role as a safe and inclusive place and prevent incidents of bullying or discrimination against gay and lesbian adolescents.

The activity will be carried out by volunteers from the associations, by experts in the psychological and educational fields and coordinated by the school manager of the Circolo Arcobaleno, Prof. Davide Zotti.

On November 9th, at 6:00 PM, in the Aula Magna of the Dante Alighieri Classical High School, Via Giustiniano 3, Trieste., a conference will be held to present this project and data obtained from the research Psychophysical well-being and internalized homophobia of people with different sexual orientations in Friuli Venezia Giulia, research carried out under the supervision of Prof. John Baptist Flebus and the psychologist Dr. Margherita Bottino, who will be present at the conference together with the psychotherapist Dr. Adriana Monzani.

The conference will also be presented in the provinces of Udine, Gorizia, and Pordenone on November 25, December 2, and December 14, respectively.

At a time when the homophobic climate in Italy is becoming increasingly dire, we believe it is essential to continue our commitment through educational initiatives that promote a culture of mutual respect and solidarity, and in particular help prevent and combat homophobic bullying in schools.

Convinced of the need to respond to acts of barbarism with culture.
