THE YEAR OF PEARLS tells of a sudden and destabilizing passion that leads the protagonist to discovery of a different sexual orientationLucie, a forty-year-old journalist, married with a daughter, leads a satisfying life until she meets the young Magda: in the space of a year all her roles, personal and social, are tragically called into question.
Never gratuitous in its provocations and the often disturbing topics it proposes, the novel engages with its rapid pace and at the same time provokes the reader with a lucid, authentic and never predictable reflection on highly topical issues.
Zuzana Brabcová, born in Prague in 1959, won the prestigious Orten Prize in 1987 with her novel Daleko od stromu (Far from the Tree). The Year of Pearls is her fourth narrative work.
Politically opposed during the communist regime, she was barred from university studies and held menial jobs; she now combines her work as a writer with that of editor at the Garamond publishing house.
