Like every year on May 17th, on the occasion of the International Day Against Homophobia, Arcigay produces and releases a report on the main homotransphobic incidents reported by the mass media over the past twelve months. This rigorously compiled list selects those incidents in which homotransphobia is clearly evident and discards those veiled by uncertainty or ambiguity. A total of 75 news stories are reported, drawn from local and national news. They depict a country where hatred and aversion toward gay, lesbian, and transgender people takes many different forms and manifests itself in the most diverse settings, from the streets to families to the halls of Parliament. This includes insults, beatings, acts against LGBTI people's freedom of expression, harassment, humiliation, mockery, rape, blackmail... And above all, it includes lives cut short, at the hands of violent murderers or those who, in a world that rejects them, no longer want to live. One murder, four suicides, and two attempted suicides are the – absolutely partial – toll of a horrific year and of a country that expects immediate answers on these issues.
