FERRARA

The City of Ferrara dedicates the month of May to the fight against homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia. May was chosen because since 2004, the European Union has annually celebrated the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) on the 17th of the month.

Combating all forms of violence and discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and intersex people is the commitment of the Municipality of Ferrara, the University of Ferrara, and many local associations and trade unions, alongside the associations Arcigay Ferrara, Arcilesbica Ferrara, Agedo, and Famiglie arcobaleno, which have always been committed to combating homophobia and transphobia and promoting the recognition of LGBTI rights.

The month of May thus becomes a time for reflection, discussion, and sharing of issues that engage all of civil society. This will culminate on May 17th, which will be celebrated with a large street party on the city's rainbow-lined Via Ripagrande, home to the headquarters of all of Ferrara's LGBTI associations. This street party will be a time for political debate, but also for entertainment, with the goal of uniting to defeat a homophobic and exclusionary culture.

A rich program of events will take place throughout May, featuring a variety of settings and locations. (See the program brochure.)

The program for May 17th is very rich and varied and will focus on the pedestrianized stretch of Via Ripagrande for the occasion, which includes the first part of the street, from the intersection with Porta Reno to the intersection with Via Boccaleone.

The event will begin at 5:00 PM with the inauguration of the photographic exhibition "Famiglie," dedicated to rainbow families and organized by the Ready network, a network that involves many Italian municipalities, of which Ferrara is a member.

Also at 5:00 PM, an area dedicated to educational games for children will be set up by Spazio Studio h18, an association founded six months ago and specializing in training and supporting the studies of children and adolescents. An experienced educator will engage children aged 6 to 12 in fun activities designed to stimulate their intellectual abilities.

At 5:30 p.m., the stand will open, organized by the "We Are All HIV-Involved" HIV Institutional Roundtable. This group, which includes many Ferrara institutions and associations, including local LGBTI associations, the Hospital Trust, Avis, the Pharmacy Owners Association, and the Women's Justice Center, will be staffing the space for the occasion, administering free HIV self-tests and providing information and training on prevention. Doctors and nurses from the Infectious Diseases Department of Ferrara Hospital and medical students from the Sism association will also be present.

Following the welcome address from the authorities scheduled for 6:00 PM, a roundtable discussion will address the proposed regional law against homosexuality and transphobia. The panel will include Ferrara's Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Equal Opportunities, Massimo Maisto, and Roberta Mori, President of the Emilia-Romagna Regional Commission for Equal Opportunities.

From 7:30 PM until closing time at midnight, the street will transform into a veritable open-air party with DJ sets, aperitifs, food and wine stands, and plenty of fun.

Many organizations will contribute to the May 17th event, ensuring that the Day becomes a celebration for all in the City of Ferrara, and that the wall of division and discrimination that some still vainly attempt to erect against LGBTI people is torn down.

The event is promoted by Arcigay Ferrara, Arcilesbica Ferrara, Agedo and Famiglie Arcobaleno with Gruppo TransFer and Gruppo Giovani Lgbti+

Thanks for their collaboration and participation, in addition to the Municipality of Ferrara, the University of Ferrara and the Ferrara Hospital.

Presentation of Elements of Homosexual Criticism
by Mario Mieli
with Lorenzo Bernini and Massimo Prearo

At Lìbrati. The Women's Bookshop of Padua

In celebration of the political and cultural journey being forged together with the citizens of Padua for Padua Pride 2018, Lìbrati. Padua's women's bookshop awaits you on Thursday, May 17th at 6:00 PM for the presentation of Elementi di critica omosessuale (Elements of Homosexual Criticism), Mario Mieli's most important work, considered the most important theoretical essay produced within the political-existential experience of the first Italian gay movement. The book, originally Mieli's thesis in moral philosophy, has had a complicated publishing history, first published by Einaudi in 1977 and then by Feltrinelli in 2002. After a long period during which the text was no longer available, Feltrinelli published a new edition at the end of 2017, the release of which we can only celebrate.

Guests and speakers of the evening: Lorenzo Bernini and Massimo Prearo.

From the back cover:

Mieli's proposal, illustrated in the book and experienced firsthand with extreme consistency, is a utopia to be lived, starting from the premise that the liberation of eros in its neglected and repressed forms is the only serious antidote to the deadly dominance of the Norm and capitalism. It is, Mieli says, a matter of opening a breach in the psyche mutilated by the dictatorship of normality to allow the transsexuality buried within each of us to emerge, "the original and profound hermaphroditism of every individual." This work of liberation is the foundation of a process of dissolution and recomposition of human identity that aims to achieve a new androgynous and pansexual subjectivity. Themes of this kind, also dear to certain science fiction, make Mieli a forerunner of many subsequent studies and reflections that, starting in the 1980s, have re-examined the categories of sexuality in the name of a creative vision of the concepts of gender, orientation, and sexual identity. Mieli's recipe was impossible, but his thinking remains even today, even more so than yesterday, in tune with cultural and social evolutionary lines that move toward overcoming dualisms and traditional interdictions.

Lorenzo Bernini is an associate professor of Political Philosophy at the University of Verona. With Professor Adriana Cavarero, he founded the PoliTeSse Research Center (Politics and Theories of Sexuality, www.politesse.it), of which he is now director. His interests range from classical modern political philosophy (especially Thomas Hobbes) and twentieth-century French thought (especially Michel Foucault), to contemporary theories of radical democracy, critical theories of race, and queer theories. His books include Queer Apocalypses: Elements of Antisocial Theory (Edizioni ETS, 2013), translated into Spanish (Editorial EGALES, 2015) and English (Palgrave Macmillan, 2017), and Queer Theories: An Introduction (Mimesis, 2017), which is currently being translated into Spanish.

Massimo Prearo, a PhD in Political Studies from the EHESS in Paris, was a Marie Curie Fellow at the Politesse Research Center at the University of Verona (2013-2015). Alongside his work on LGBTQI movements, he is currently conducting research on anti-gender movements as part of a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Verona. He has published The Pride Factory: A Genealogy of LGBT Movements (ETS) and edited the volume Politics of Pride: Sexuality, Subjectivity, and Social Movements (ETS). His latest book, The Anti-Gender Crusade: From the Vatican to the Demonstrations for Everyone (Kaplan), has just been published.
