2012 begins with bad news for our region. The Arcigay "Agorà" Provincial Committee of Pesaro and Urbino expresses its deepest sympathy to the victim of the neo-fascist attack in Fano on January 2nd.
Hoping that the five men who, according to testimony, committed this act are brought to justice as soon as possible, we would like to emphasize once again that Fano, and the entire provincial territory, is far from the happy island that some have touted it to be.
Anti-Semitism, racism, Nazism, and homophobia are all shades of the same disease of hatred, which, if left untreated, can have devastating consequences. Especially in times of economic crisis like this. Just study history and see what happened in Italy after the First World War and in Germany after the 1929 crisis.
In fact, when the institutions and their representatives do not condemn, do not investigate and do not prosecute in an exemplary manner the people who commit such crimes, and do not promote a culture of respect and civility, they are jointly responsible for the decline.
For this reason, we call not only for prompt "surgical" intervention to stop and punish those responsible for such acts, but also for a true awareness of the fact that a social cancer of intolerance exists in our region, for which large-scale measures must be taken—at the scholastic, social, and cultural levels—as quickly as possible.
