Bologna, July 21, 2020 A signature drive to support the approval, without any changes or compromises, of the anti-homotransphobia law currently under discussion in the Chamber of Deputies' Justice Committee, and a social media campaign to raise public awareness: this initiative is supported by Agedo, All Out, Arcigay, 6000 Sardines, Arci, Differenza Lesbica, Famiglie Arcobaleno, Gay Center, neg.zone, Rete Genitori Rainbow, Diversity, Polis Aperta, Salento Pride, Ra.Ne, and UAAR – Union of Rationalist Atheists and Agnostics, and has already reached 5,000 signatures in just a few hours.
“"Women and LGBTI+ people must be protected from discrimination and violence. We can no longer delay; we need effective legislation now!" is the title of the petition, available at the link. http://allout.org/it/DallaParteDeiDiritti. "The latest research by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights on LGBTI+ people in Italy," the petition states, "shows that 62% avoid holding the hand of their loved one, and 30% avoid certain places for fear of being attacked. 23% report having experienced discrimination at work, 32% have experienced at least one episode of harassment in the last year, and 8% have experienced one episode of physical assault in the last 5 years. Only 1 in 6 people reported these incidents. After so many failures to pass laws on these issues," the signatories continue, "it is time for Italy to do its part in combating discrimination and violence based on sex, gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity." "We are citizens of this country," they conclude, "and we ask for one simple thing: to be able to live and love free from fear." Connected to the signature collection is the social media campaign #DallaParteDeiDiritti, which re-proposes, through a series of infographics, the data emerging from the research by the European Agency for Fundamental Rights.
“We are now in the midst of the debate on the law against homophobia – he comments Gabriele Piazzoni, general secretary of Arcigay With the filing of the amendments, we also reveal the attempts that political forces that are staunchly homophobic and transphobic are preparing to deploy to undermine this battle for civilization. To counter these assaults, we need the mobilization of the entire public, which we are certain will be overwhelmingly in favor of approving this law. Therefore, we invite everyone to sign the petition.
“Violence and discrimination against LGBTI+ people are a daily reality in our country, but unlike many other European countries, there is no protection against homophobia. This is also why Italy is only 34th in the Council of Europe's ranking of LGBTI rights. With the #DallaParteDeiDiritti campaign, we want to send a strong and clear message: we can no longer delay, we need an effective law now. Yuri Guaiana, Senior Campaigns Manager at All Out.
